Dogs at risk in the heat: Did you know that Brachiocephalic (i.e. “flat-faced” dogs) are more prone to heatstroke? Dog’s use their nasal passages to aid in cooling the air the breathe, so breeds such as Pugs and Boston Terriers are at a disadvantage over their longer-nosed counterparts with larger nasal cavities.
Overweight dogs, plus the very young and old also are prone to heat-related problems.
Whether it be down the street or out of state, my big dogs love to travel! They and their fur-faced friends have complied some helpful tips to make your next public outing a successful one. They look long but are worth the few minutes they take to read through. Happy tails--er, trails!
“Did you know that on warm days, the inside of a car heats up very quickly? When it’s 85 degrees out, the temperature inside a car — even with the windows left slightly open — can soar to 102 degrees in 10 minutes, and reach 120 in just half an hour. On hotter days, the temperature will climb even higher. Outside temperatures in the 70s can be dangerous, as well.”

Weight issues: Sixty percent of US dogs and cats were overweight according to a 2005 study published by Purina. And of the overweight pets, almost half their owners considered them to be in ideal shape. Another aspect of the study showed that leaner dogs not only had fewer health problems, they lived an average of 15% longer than those carrying extra pounds.
