Dogs at risk in the heat: Did you know that Brachiocephalic (i.e. “flat-faced” dogs) are more prone to heatstroke?  Dog’s use their nasal passages to aid in cooling the air the breathe, so breeds such as Pugs and Boston Terriers are at a disadvantage over their longer-nosed counterparts with larger nasal cavities.

Overweight dogs, plus the very young and old also are prone to heat-related problems.

BANKS

Many banks offer drive-thru dog treats and some even allow dogs inside--call yours to see if they do!

“Did you know that on warm days, the inside of a car heats up very quickly? When it’s 85 degrees out, the temperature inside a car — even with the windows left slightly open — can soar to 102 degrees in 10 minutes, and reach 120 in just half an hour. On hotter days, the temperature will climb even higher. Outside temperatures in the 70s can be dangerous, as well.

First Ranger’s GOLDEN RULES. Always:
Promote your dog’s safety and welfare, and
  Respect the rights of others.

And here’s EZ’s Etiquette & Safety Tips:
DOGS AND HEATSTROKE: Even parking in the shade with the windows down for a few minutes can be dangerous for your dog, especially in Texas. Temperatures can soar and heatstroke can occur in minutes. (Heatstroke in Dogs: http://dogs.about.com/cs/generalcare/a/heatstroke.htm; see more heatstroke links in boxes at right.)
Use LEASHES at all times--we dogs mean well, but don’t always know where we should (or should not) be. Keep us safe.
For safety en route, we recommend specially designed car restraints while on the road, e.g., seat belt harnesses or properly secured crates.
We depend on you to make appropriate food choices for us; excess weight in canines is a major problem (See Purina study at right.) Even lean dogs need proper nutrition and can suffer from food allergies/intolerances; common symptoms include flatulence and irregular stools. Consult your trusted vet if you have any questions about anything your dog ingests.
ALWAYS SCOOP YOUR POOP! Our person carries special bags just for this. Keep these businesses beautiful so they will always welcome us.
Even the sweetest dog can get defensive if she isn’t used to strange people, places or other dogs. If we seem reluctant or scared, please don’t force us to interact. Stick with the drive-through instead and consult with a dog trainer on how to socialize us.
Okay brace yourself for this one: not all humans love dogs (*GASP*!) Hard to believe, but it’s true. We dogs frequently forget this so you humans need to keep us at a polite distance unless we are welcome.

Remember: Taking dogs out in public is a privilege, not a right.
Help us behave so we’ll ALL be invited back!http://dogs.about.com/cs/generalcare/a/heatstroke.htmhttp://dogs.about.com/cs/generalcare/a/heatstroke.htmshapeimage_3_link_0shapeimage_3_link_1

Weight issues: Sixty percent of US dogs and cats were overweight according to a study published by Purina.  And of the overweight pets, almost half their owners considered them to be in ideal shape.  Another aspect of the study showed that leaner dogs not only had fewer health problems, they lived an average of 15% longer than those carrying extra pounds.
